USS Maine Base September 2017 Meeting/Holland Club Induction held 17 September 2017

 

Chief of the Boat and Holland Club Coordinator, John Starbird, organized and set up the ceremony, greeted guests and VIPs as they arrived.

 

Base Commander Chris Smith opened the ceremony at 1234 stating the purpose and introduced the three Holland Club inductees; Richard Sweeney, Roger Burleigh and Millard Dolley. He read the USSVI Creed and introduced the VIPs.

 

All stood for the Pledge Allegiance to The Flag.

 

Base Chaplain, Terry Schmidt gave the Invocation.

 

Senior Vice Commander, Larry Ferrell and Chief of the Boat, John Starbird, performed the Lost Boat Ceremony.

 

Northeast Region District 1 Commander, Peter Koester, called Sr. Vice Commander Larry Ferrell forward and presented him with the USSVI Silver Anchor Award. This prestigious award is presented to a member in recognition of his efforts to support one of the primary objectives of our Creed … to provide a way for all submariners to gather for their mutual benefit and enjoyment. The award recognizes the Member’s volunteer support for meetings, projects and events, including work to recruit new members and to retain the current membership of the Base, and is intended to recognize recent accomplishments.

 

The Holland Club inductees were called forward and were introduced and inducted into the Holland Club by Northeast Region District 1 Commander Peter Koester.

 

The VIPs were called upon and in turn each recognized the new Holland Club members.

 

John Morris, Maine Public Safety Commissioner and a Holland Club member, representing Governor Paul LePage.

Mark Winter, representing Maine Senator Susan Collins

Pam Trinward, representing Congresswoman Chellie Pingree

Tim Gallant, representing Maine Congressman Bruce Poliquin

Thomas Longstaff, Maine State Legislature Representative

 

Author David Jourdan was guest speaker who gave a presentation on the role of the USS Nautilis in the June 1942 Battle of Midway. Mr. Jourdan is a former Submarine Officer and the founder and president of Nauticos, a company devoted to the exploration of the deep sea. Nauticos is responsible for the discovery of the Japanese aircraft carrier Kaga and the Japanese submarine I-52. He is the author of The Deep Sea Quest for Amelia Earhart and Never Forgotten: The search and discovery of Israel’s Lost Submarine Dakar.

 

The meeting was adjourned and a pot luck luncheon was enjoyed by all present.

 

 

Subvet Meeting  Holland Club

 

 

The Holland Club Induction was held  on September 20, 2015 in Augusta. From 12 to 12:30 Real Cyr created arriving guests. Base Commander Larry Ferrell opened the meeting with the reading of the creed, followed invocation by base Chaplin Terry Schmidt. Pledge Allegiance to the flag then the tolling of the bells for the five boats lost in September. Larry announced there would be a regular meeting on October 18. Dues are due and payable by December 30. He also announced that we would participate in Wreaths Across America again this year. At that point he turned the meeting over to Senior Base Commander John Starbird.

 

John introduced Governor Paul  LePage and his wife Ann and  then introduced Senator Susan Collins representative, who presented certificates to the recipients, followed by Chellie Pingree's representative, followed by Maine State Representative Thomas Longstaff.  We had a great speech from the guest speaker Rear Jim D. Cossey, Rear Admiral, USN Retired. 

 

The precipants this year were John Morris and Peter Talbot.  Certificates were presented by NorthEastern Region District 1 Commander, Peter Koester.

 

The Guest Speaker gave one of the best  talks of any Holland Club Induction  speaker  that I have heard in my 10 years as a member.

 

This was followed by a Pot Luck dinner that was enjoyed by all.
