Fourth of July parade - Augusta, Maine 4 July 2007

On this day, the city of Augusta honored the USS Maine SSBN 741, its Gold Crew CO, Cmdr. George Norman,  COB and representative Blue Crew members (see list below) who visited the area during the week of the 4th.

COB, MMCM Keotla, by the way, has 33 patrols under his belt and has a couple three more to go!

Smartly attired in dress whites, the crew marched in the parade with a sharp color guard out front ahead of a "Remember the Maine" banner.  Our float (which won the parade "Most Patriotic Float" award) and Base members marched proudly behind "our crew"!  On the previous evening, a reception for the visiting crew members, sponsored by the Casco Bay Naval League and USS Maine Base, was held in Bath at the Holiday Inn. On that evening, a pair of moose antlers, donated by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (IF&W) and mounted by our Parade Coordinator/Float Custodian Larry Ferrell, was presented to the ship to be displayed on their off crew quarterdeck.  In turn, the crew presented the IF &W with a plaque thanking the Department for the antlers. A picture of Larry Ferrell and the moose antlers and another of the thank you plaque, held by Larry, is pictured at the end of this series. On Thursday evening, the 5th, Bath Iron Works (BIW) hosted at lobster bake for the crew at the Bath Holiday Inn.  Other events, among several, included a trip to LL Bean, a Seadogs game, and a visit to the Togus VA to honor veterans there.

USS Maine Base wishes to especially thank the visiting USS Maine crew members and their wives for taking precious leave time to come to Maine.
